William Wordsworth

The Poet / কবির পরিচিতি:

William Wordsworth (1770–1850) was one of the greatest poets of nature.

উইলিয়াম ওয়ার্ডসওয়ার্থ (১৭৭০–১৮৫০) প্রকৃতির অন্যতম শ্রেষ্ঠ কবি ছিলেন।

He was a major poet of the Romantic period.

তিনি রোমান্টিক যুগের একজন প্রধান কবি ছিলেন।

His greatest poems are The Prelude, The Daffodils, Tintern Abbey, London 1802, Ode to Duty, Upon Westminster Bridge etc.

তাঁর বিখ্যাত কবিতাগুলোর মধ্যে আছে The Prelude, The Daffodils, Tintern Abbey, London 1802, Ode to Duty, Upon Westminster Bridge প্রভৃতি।

He spent most of his life in the Lake District of England.

তিনি জীবনের বেশিরভাগ সময় ইংল্যান্ডের লেক ডিস্ট্রিক্টে কাটিয়েছেন।

The present text is an edited version of his poem We Are Seven.

A simple child,

That lightly draws its breath,

And feels its life in every limb,

I met a little cottage girl:

আমি একটি ছোট কুটিরের মেয়ের সঙ্গে দেখা করলাম।

She was eight years old, she said

সে বলল, তার বয়স আট বছর।

Her hair was thick with many a curl

That clustered round her head.

"Sisters and brothers, little maid,

"ভাইবোন আছে তোমার, ছোট্ট মেয়ে?

How many may you be?"

তোমরা কজন আছো?"

"How many? Seven in all," she said,

"কজন? আমরা মোট সাতজন," সে বলল,

And wondering looked at me.

এবং বিস্ময়ে আমার দিকে তাকাল।

"And where are they? I pray you tell."

"তারা কোথায় আছে? দয়া করে বলো।"

She answered, "Seven are we;

সে উত্তর দিল, "আমরা সাতজন;

And two of us at Conway dwell,

আমাদের দুজন থাকি কনওয়েতে,

And two are gone to sea.

আর দুজন গেছে সমুদ্রে।

Two of us in the churchyard lie,

আমাদের দুজন শুইয়ে আছে গোরস্থানে,

My sister and my brother;

আমার বোন আর আমার ভাই;

And in the churchyard cottage I

Dwell near them with my mother."

Answer: The little girl had a rustic, woodland look. She was wildly dressed. Her eyes were very fair, and her beauty made the poet happy.

Q4. What makes the poet wonder?

Answer: The poet is surprised that the girl still considers the two dead siblings as part of the seven.

উত্তর: কবি বিস্মিত হন যে, মেয়েটি এখনও মৃত দুই ভাইবোনকে সাতজনের অংশ বলে গণ্য করে।

"You say that two at Conway dwell,

"তুমি বলছো দু’জন কনওয়েতে থাকে,

And two are gone to sea,

আর দু’জন সমুদ্রে গেছে,

Yet ye are seven! — I pray you tell,

তবু বলছো তোমরা সাতজন! — দয়া করে বলো,

Sweet maid, how this may be?"

প্রিয় মেয়ে, এটা কিভাবে হয়?"

Then did the little maid reply,

তখন ছোট মেয়েটি উত্তর দিল,

"Seven boys and girls are we;

"আমরা সাতজন ছেলে-মেয়ে;

Two of us in the churchyard lie,

আমাদের দু’জন সমাধিক্ষেত্রে শুয়ে আছে,

Beneath the churchyard tree."

"You run about, my little maid,

"তুমি দৌড়াদৌড়ি করো, ছোট্ট মেয়েটি,

Your limbs they are alive;

If two are in the churchyard laid,

যদি দু’জন সমাধিক্ষেত্রে শুয়ে থাকে,

Then ye are only five."

তবে তো তোমরা মাত্র পাঁচজন।

"Their graves are green, they may be seen,"

"তাদের কবর সবুজ ঘাসে ঢাকা, দেখা যায়,"

The little maid replied,

ছোট মেয়েটি উত্তর দিল,

"Twelve steps or more from my mother's door

"আমার মায়ের দরজা থেকে বারো ধাপ দূরে

And they are side by side.

তারা পাশাপাশি রয়েছে।"

"How many are you then," said I,

"তবে তোমরা কয়জন?" আমি জিজ্ঞেস করলাম,

"If they two are in heaven?"

"যদি তারা স্বর্গে থাকে?"

Quick was the little maid's reply,

ছোট মেয়েটির উত্তর এল দ্রুত,

"O master! We are seven."

"হে প্রভু! আমরা সাতজন।"

"But they are dead; those two are dead!

"কিন্তু তারা তো মারা গেছে; দু’জনই মারা গেছে!

Their spirits are in heaven!"

তাদের আত্মা এখন স্বর্গে!"

'Twas throwing words away; for still

The little maid would have her will,

And say, "Nay, we are seven!"

👉 Correct: Only two were dead.

(d) Why does the girl say, "We are seven"?

(ঘ) মেয়েটি কেন বলে, “আমরা সাতজন”?

→ The girl says “We are seven” because even though two of her siblings are dead, she still considers them part of the family.

বাংলা অর্থ: মেয়েটি বলে "আমরা সাতজন" কারণ তার দুই ভাই-বোন মারা গেলেও সে তাদের পরিবার থেকে বাদ দেয় না।
