The king of Kings, Emperor Akbar, who ruled over India was a great lover of arts, sciences, literature and music.

One day, on a fine morning, he was walking in his vast garden.

His garden was lined with trees that produced the tastiest and juiciest fruits in the whole kingdom.

There were flowers of all shapes and sizes in his garden.

He had his most trusted and favourite minister Birbal with him.

তার সঙ্গে ছিলেন তার সবচেয়ে বিশ্বাসভাজন ও প্রিয় মন্ত্রী, বিরবল।

But the great Emperor Akbar did not have peace of mind, the quality without which no one, not even the king of kings, can appreciate beauty.

কিন্তু মহান সম্রাট আকবর মানসিক শান্তিতে ছিলেন না, যেটি এমন একটি গুণ যা ছাড়া কেউ – এমনকি রাজাদের রাজাও – সৌন্দর্য উপভোগ করতে পারে না।

Wise Birbal, noticing this, asked Akbar, 'O great and powerful King, what is troubling you? You do not seem to be your usual self, for my king never fails to enjoy the beauty of the greatest kingdom this earth has ever seen.'

বুদ্ধিমান বিরবল এটি লক্ষ্য করে আকবরকে জিজ্ঞেস করলেন, 'হে মহান ও শক্তিশালী রাজা, আপনাকে কী চিন্তিত করছে? আপনি আজ স্বাভাবিক নেই, কারণ আমার রাজা কখনও এই পৃথিবীর শ্রেষ্ঠ রাজ্যের সৌন্দর্য উপভোগ করতে ব্যর্থ হন না।'

Akbar replied, 'Birbal, my dearest friend, you are right. There is indeed a riddle that has been troubling me. An idle thought, which came to me in passing, is now my cause of worry. I am troubled because I cannot find an answer to a simple question — what is the fastest thing on this planet?'

আকবর উত্তর দিলেন, 'বিরবল, আমার প্রিয় বন্ধু, তুমি ঠিক বলেছ। একটি ধাঁধাঁ আমাকে সত্যিই চিন্তিত করছে। একটি সাধারণ চিন্তা, যা হঠাৎ মনে এসেছিল, এখন আমার উদ্বেগের কারণ। আমি চিন্তিত কারণ আমি একটি সহজ প্রশ্নের উত্তর খুঁজে পাচ্ছি না — পৃথিবীতে সবচেয়ে দ্রুত জিনিস কী?'

Birbal said, 'Is that all, your Majesty? Call your courtiers together. Let us see if one of them can answer. If not, then I am certain I can tell you of the fastest thing on the planet.'

বিরবল বললেন, 'এই তো সব, মহারাজ? আপনার দরবারীদের ডাকুন। দেখা যাক কেউ উত্তর দিতে পারে কি না। যদি না পারে, তবে আমি নিশ্চিত আমি আপনাকে পৃথিবীর সবচেয়ে দ্রুত জিনিস সম্পর্কে বলতে পারব।'

At the King's court, many heard the question that was troubling Akbar. Most were puzzled. Some said, 'bullock carts', others said, 'horses'. But Birbal just smiled at them.

রাজ দরবারে অনেকেই আকবরকে চিন্তিত করা প্রশ্নটি শুনেছিল। অধিকাংশই বিভ্রান্ত হয়ে পড়েছিল। কেউ বলল 'বৈঠা গাড়ি', কেউ বলল 'ঘোড়া'। কিন্তু বিরবল কেবল তাদের দেখে হাসলেন।

After everyone had failed to satisfy Emperor Akbar, Birbal offered to answer his question. He said, 'Your Majesty, it is the human mind!'

যখন কেউ আকবরকে সন্তুষ্ট করতে পারল না, তখন বিরবল তার প্রশ্নের উত্তর দেওয়ার প্রস্তাব দিলেন। তিনি বললেন, 'মহারাজ, সেটা হলো মানব মন!'

To prove it, he said, 'Let the people of our kingdom present a problem to me. I shall show you how fast I can solve it using the powers of my mind alone.'

A man came forward from the audience. He claimed that his neighbour had sold him his well. Now, when he wanted to draw water from the well, his neighbour wanted to charge him money for it.

After being summoned to the court, his neighbour argued that he had just sold him the well, not the water in it.

Akbar listened to this argument carefully and asked Birbal to settle the dispute.

Birbal smiled at the man and said, 'I think the solution is rather simple.

It is your well now, your neighbour should be paying you rent for keeping water in your well.

The neighbour realised that he was outwitted and withdrew his claim immediately.

All around, people were amazed at the wisdom of Birbal and the speed of the human mind that has the ability to solve a problem instantly.

Past Continuous Tense – অতীতকালীন চলমান কাজ

At the King's court, many heard the question that was troubling Akbar.

রাজদরবারে অনেকেই সেই প্রশ্নটি শুনেছিল যা আকবরকে চিন্তায় ফেলেছিল।

The coloured words indicate actions that were continuing at a time in the past.

রঙ করা শব্দগুলো বোঝায় যে কাজগুলো অতীতে এক সময় চলছিল।

Such words which denote an action that was happening in the past are known as Past Continuous Tense.

যেসব শব্দ অতীতে চলতে থাকা কাজ বোঝায়, সেগুলোকে বলে Past Continuous Tense (অতীতকালীন চলমান ক্রিয়া)।

Structure: was/were + verb + ing

গঠন: was/were + verb-এর ing রূপ

Dialogue Writing – সংলাপ রচনা শিখি

How do we write a dialogue?

আমরা কীভাবে সংলাপ লিখি?

• In case of dialogue writing, we usually write exactly those words that are actually spoken.
  সংলাপ লেখার ক্ষেত্রে, সাধারণত আমরা সেই কথাগুলোই লিখি যা প্রকৃতপক্ষে বলা হয়।

• Abbreviations (সংক্ষিপ্ত রূপ) and contracted forms (সংক্ষিপ্ত সংযোগ রূপ) are used.
  যেমন: I'm, You're, Don't, Wasn't ইত্যাদি।

• It should be in a conversational style – কথোপকথনের মতো হতে হবে।

Reshma : Well, not bad really! But now I'm getting a bit nervous about the result.

রেশমা: খুব একটা খারাপ হয়নি! তবে এখন ফলাফল নিয়ে একটু নার্ভাস লাগছে।

Sita : Oh, come on! I'm sure you'll do well.

সীতা: আরে ধুর! আমি নিশ্চিত তুমি ভালো করবে।

A Crow and a Fox

A crow was flying for a long time. He became very hungry. Suddenly, he found a piece of meat on the road. He picked it up and flew to a tree to eat it. A clever fox saw him and wanted the meat. He praised the crow and asked him to sing. As the crow opened his mouth to sing, the meat fell down. The fox took the meat and ran away. The crow was very sad and flew away.
