Let's read...

Tarun studies in class five. His teacher has given a task to the students of his class. He has told them to write a paragraph on the Taj Mahal. But Tarun does not know much about the Taj Mahal. He only knows that it is a beautiful monument situated in Agra. Worried, he came back home in the evening and asked his grandfather:

"Grandfather, can you tell me something about Taj Mahal?"

Tarun's grandfather was a retired teacher. He knew a lot about this beautiful monument. He smiled and said,

"Ok. If you promise to be a good boy, I will tell you many things about the Taj."

Tarun promised not to be naughty. So, his grandfather began to tell him the story of Taj Mahal.

"Once upon a time there lived a prince named Khurram. He was the son of Jehangir, and the grandson of Akbar the Great. One day Khurram went to the Meena Bazaar with his friends. There he caught a glimpse of an extremely beautiful girl who was selling silk and glass beads. The girl was Arjumand Banu Begum. She was born in a family of a Persian nobility. After meeting her, Khurram went back to his father and said that he wanted to marry her. Khurram married Arjumand Banu Begum in 1612, five years after their first meeting."

তরুণ পঞ্চম শ্রেণিতে পড়ে। তার শিক্ষক তার শ্রেণির ছাত্রদের একটি কাজ দিয়েছেন। তিনি তাদের তাজমহলের ওপর একটি বেশি কিছু জানে না। সে শুধু জানে যে, এটি হল আগ্রাতে অনুচ্ছেদ লিখতে বলেছেন। কিন্তু তরুণ তাজমহল সম্বন্ধে অবস্থিত একটি সুন্দর সৌধ। চিন্তিত হয়ে সে বাড়ি ফিরে এল এবং সন্ধ্যেবেলায় তার ঠাকুরদাদাকে প্রশ্ন করল:

"ঠাকুরদাদা, তুমি আমাকে তাজমহল সম্বন্ধে কিছু বলতে পারো?”

তরুণের ঠাকুরদাদা একজন অবসরপ্রাপ্ত শিক্ষক ছিলেন। তিনি এই সুন্দর সৌধ সম্বন্ধে অনেক বেশি জানতেন। তিনি হাসলেন এবং বললেন,

"ঠিক আছে। যদি তুমি একজন ভালো ছেলে হওয়ার প্রতিজ্ঞা করো, আমি তোমাকে তাজমহল সম্বন্ধে অনেক কিছু বলব।"

তরুণ দুষ্টু না-হওয়ার প্রতিশ্রুতি দিল। তাই তার ঠাকুরদাদা তাজমহলের গল্প বলতে শুরু করলেন।

একসময় খুররম নামে এক রাজকুমার বাস করতেন। তিনি ছিলেন জাহাঙ্গিরের পুত্র, এবং মহান আকবরের নাতি। একদিন খুররম তার বন্ধুদের সঙ্গে মীনা বাজারে গিয়েছিলেন।

সেখানে তিনি একজন অত্যন্ত সুন্দরী মেয়ের এক ঝলক দেখা পেলেন। সে পশম এবং কাচের পুঁতি বিক্রি করছিল। মেয়েটি ছিল আর্জুমান্দ বানু বেগম। তিনি এক পার্শিয়ান ভদ্র পরিবারে জন্মেছিলেন। তার সঙ্গে দেখা হওয়ার পর, খুররম তার বাবার কাছে ফিরে গেলেন

এবং বললেন যে তিনি মেয়েটিকে বিবাহ করতে চান। তাদের প্রথম সাক্ষাতের পাঁচ বছর পরে খুররম আর্জুমান্দ বানু বেগমকে ১৬১২ খ্রিস্টাব্দে বিবাহ করেন।

At this point Tarun stopped his grandfather:

"But, grandfather, I don't want to hear the story of prince Khurram. I want to know about the Taj Mahal."

"Be patient, Tarun. Let me finish the whole story," said his grandfather.

"All right" said Tarun.

His grandfather continued with the story.

"Prince Khurram was later known as Shah Jahan. He became the emperor in the year 1628. Arjumand Banu Begum was later renamed as Mumtaz Mahal."

"But what does the name Mumtaz Mahal mean?" asked Tarun.

"It means the brightest crown of the world," answered his grandfather.

Then he continued with his tale, "When Mumtaz was on her deathbed, Shah Jahan promised her that he would not marry again. He also promised her that he would build the most beautiful monument over her grave."

এরপর তরুণ তার ঠাকুরদাদাকে থামিয়ে দিল।

"কিন্তু, ঠাকুরদাদা, আমি রাজকুমার খুররমের গল্প শুনতে চাই না। আমি তাজমহল সম্বন্ধে জানতে চাই।"

"শান্ত হও, তরুণ। আমাকে পুরো গল্পটা শেষ করতে দাও," তার ঠাকুরদাদা বললেন।

"রাজকুমার খুররম পরবর্তীকালে শাহজাহান বলে পরিচিত হন। তিনি ষোলোশ আঠাশ খ্রিস্টাব্দে সম্রাট হন। আর্জুমান্দ বানু বেগম-কে পরবর্তীকালে পুনরায় নাম দেওয়া হয়েছিল মমতাজ মহল।"

মমতাজ মহল নামের অর্থ কী?” তরুণ জিজ্ঞাসা করল।

"এটির অর্থ হল বিশ্বের উজ্জ্বলতম রাজমুকুট,” তার ঠাকুরদাদা উত্তর দিলেন।

তারপর তিনি তাঁর গল্প বলে যেতে লাগলেন, "যখন মমতাজ তাঁর মৃত্যুশয্যায়, শাহজাহান তাঁকে প্রতিশ্রুতি দিয়েছিলেন যে, তিনি আর বিবাহ করবেন না। তিনি তাঁকে আরও দিলেন যে, তিনি তাঁর কবরের ওপর - সবচেয়ে সুন্দর সমাধিমন্দির তৈরি করবেন।

"What is a mausoleum, grandfather?" asked Tarun in surprise.

"Oh! A mausoleum is a building built to house the dead," said grandfather. According to legends, Shah Jahan was so sad after her death that he ordered the court to mourn for two years. Later, Shah Jahan started to build the world's most beautiful monument beside the river Yamuna in memory of his beloved wife. It took 22 years and 22,000 workers to build the monument. The Taj Mahal was built entirely out of white marble. This white marble was brought in from all over Asia. When Shah Jahan died in 1666, his body was placed next to the grave of Mumtaz Mahal. This magnificent monument came to be known as the Taj Mahal. It is now considered to be one among the seven wonders of the world.

Grandfather paused for a moment. "Well, I have told you quite a lot today. Will this be helpful enough?"

"Oh yes, now I can easily write a paragraph on the Taj Mahal," said Tarun happily.

"স্মৃতিসৌধ কী, ঠাকুরদাদা?" তরুণ অবাক হয়ে প্রশ্ন করল।

ঠাকুরদাদা বললেন, "ওহ! একটি সমাধিমন্দির হল কবরের ওপর নির্মিত, একটি ঘর।"

জনশ্রুতি অনুসারে, শাহজাহান তার (স্ত্রী-র) মৃত্যুর পর এতই দুঃখিত ছিলেন যে তিনি তাঁর সভাসদদের দু-বছর ধরে শোক পালনের আদেশ দেন।

পরে, শাহজাহান তার প্রিয় স্ত্রী-র জন্য সবচেয়ে সুন্দর স্মৃতিসৌধটি যমুনা নদীর তীরে নির্মাণ করতে শুরু করেন। স্মৃতিসৌধটি তৈরি করতে ২২ বছর এবং ২২,০০০ কর্মী লেগেছিল। তাজমহল সম্পূর্ণভাবে সাদা মার্বেল দিয়ে তৈরি হয়েছিল। এশিয়া মহাদেশের সব জায়গা থেকে এই সাদা মার্বেল পাথর নিয়ে আসা হয়েছিল।

শাহজাহান যখন ১৬৬৬ খ্রিস্টাব্দে মারা যান, তাঁর দেহ মমতাজ মহলের পাশে রাখা হয়েছিল। এই অপূর্ব স্মৃতিসৌধটি তাজমহল বলে পরিচিত হয়। এটি এখন বিশ্বের সপ্তম আশ্চর্যের মধ্যে একটি রূপে গণ্য করা হয়।
