 Once upon a time there lived a monkey on the bank of a river. Right in the middle of the river there was a small island with many fruit trees. Sweet and juicy fruits grew on the trees. At a distance from the bank, there was a huge rock in the river. A part of it was above water. One day, attracted by the delicious fruits, the monkey jumped to reach the rock and from there leapt onto the island.

একসময় নদীর তীরে একটি বানর বাস করত। নদীর ঠিক মাঝখানে অনেক ফলের গাছসহ একটি ছোট দ্বীপ ছিল। গাছে মিষ্টি ও সরস ফল ধরেছিল। তীর থেকে কিছুটা দূরে নদীতে একটি বিশাল পাথর ছিল, যার একটি অংশ জলের উপরে ছিল। একদিন, সুস্বাদু ফলের লোভে আকৃষ্ট হয়ে, বানরটি পাথরের দিকে লাফিয়ে গেল এবং সেখান থেকে দ্বীপে পৌঁছাল।

"Not so difficult, after all," he said to himself. Soon he was enjoying the sweet fruits from the trees. There was hardly any other animal there, so he was in no danger. Hence, the monkey decided to visit the island every day.

"মোটেই খুব কঠিন ছিল না, সর্বোপরি," সে নিজেকে বলল। শীঘ্রই সে গাছগুলি থেকে মিষ্টি ফল উপভোগ করতে লাগল। সেখানে অন্য কোনও প্রাণী খুব কমই ছিল, তাই তার কোনও বিপদ ছিল না। সুতরাং, বানর প্রতিদিন এই দ্বীপটিতে যাওয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছিল।

On the far bank of the river a big crocodile lived with his wife. One day, he noticed the monkey crossing the river in his unique way. He told his wife, "Did you see him? Let's catch him tomorrow. Next morning, however, the crocodile found that catching the monkey was not easy. The monkey landed on the rock and in a flash jumped off onto the island. Hiding behind the rock, the crocodile could only watch him. He returned home without his catch.

নদীর দূরবর্তী তীরে একটি বড় কুমির তার স্ত্রীর সাথে বাস করত। একদিন, সে লক্ষ্য করল যে বানরটি তার নিজস্ব উপায়ে নদী পার হচ্ছে। সে তার স্ত্রীকে বলল, "তুমি কি তাকে দেখেছ? চল, আগামীকাল তাকে ধরি।" তবে, পরের সকালে কুমিরটি বুঝতে পারল যে বানরটিকে ধরা সহজ নয়। বানরটি পাথরের উপর নেমে মুহূর্তের মধ্যে দ্বীপে লাফিয়ে পড়ল। পাথরের আড়ালে লুকিয়ে কুমিরটি কেবল তাকে দেখতে পারল। সে শিকার না করেই বাড়ি ফিরে এল।

Days went by. The crocodile thought of many plans to catch the monkey, but nothing worked. The monkey always escaped from his clutches. One day his wife said, "You've failed to catch the monkey, but I really want to taste his sweet flesh. So, this time, you must follow my plan." The crocodile said, "Right, tell me the plan then."

কুমিরের স্ত্রী বলল, "বানরটি নদীর মাঝখানের বড় পাথরের উপর লাফিয়ে যায়। তুমি সেই পাথরের উপর স্থির হয়ে শুয়ে থাকবে। যখন সে তোমাকে পাথর ভেবে তোমার উপর লাফ দেবে, তখন তুমি সহজেই তাকে ধরতে পারবে!"

কুমির আনন্দে বলল, "কি চমৎকার ধারণা! কাল আমি নিশ্চিতভাবেই তাকে ধরতে পারব।"

 কুমিরের স্ত্রী বলল, "বানরটি নদীর মাঝখানের বড় পাথরের উপর লাফিয়ে যায়। তুমি সেই পাথরের উপর স্থির হয়ে শুয়ে থাকবে। যখন সে তোমাকে পাথর ভেবে তোমার উপর লাফ দেবে, তখন তুমি সহজেই তাকে ধরতে পারবে!"কুমির আনন্দে বলল, "কি চমৎকার ধারণা! কাল আমি নিশ্চিতভাবেই তাকে ধরতে পারব।"

Next morning, as usual, the monkey jumped onto the rock and landed on the river island.Seeing this, the crocodile swam to the rock.He lay still on the rock, keeping his head and tail well under water.Only his back was above water and it looked like a part of the rock.After having a good meal, the monkey decided to return.He looked at the rock. "Strange! The rock has become so large!", he thought."It wasn’t so big when I came here."Possibly that crocodile is playing a trick again.He’s lying there, pretending to be a rock.

পরদিন সকালে, প্রতিদিনের মতোই, বানরটি পাথরের উপর লাফিয়ে নদীর দ্বীপে পৌঁছাল।এটি দেখে কুমিরটি পাথরের দিকে সাঁতার কাটতে লাগল।সে পাথরের উপর স্থির হয়ে শুয়ে রইল, তার মাথা এবং লেজ সম্পূর্ণ পানির নিচে রাখল।শুধু তার পিঠ পানির ওপরে ছিল এবং এটি পাথরের অংশের মতো দেখাচ্ছিল।ভালো খাবার খাওয়ার পর, বানরটি ফিরে যাওয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত নিল।সে পাথরের দিকে তাকিয়ে বলল, "অদ্ভুত! পাথরটি এত বড় হয়ে গেছে!" সে ভাবল"আমি যখন এখানে এসেছিলাম, তখন এটি এত বড় ছিল না।"।সম্ভবত কুমিরটি আবার কোনো কৌশল করছে।সে সেখানে শুয়ে আছে, নিজেকে পাথর হিসেবে ভান করছে।

 The monkey thought, "If I ask him, he won’t answer. Rocks don’t talk." So, he shouted, "Hey, Rock! Why aren’t you speaking today?" There was no reply. He shouted again, "Hey, Rock! Why are you silent today?" Still no reply. The monkey called out a third time, "Hey, Rock! Why don’t you speak?"

The crocodile thought, "If I don’t answer now, he will get suspicious and run away." So he said, "Yes, my friend, I am speaking."

বানরটি ভাবল, "যদি আমি তাকে জিজ্ঞাসা করি, সে উত্তর দেবে না। কারণ পাথর তো কথা বলে না।"

তাই সে চিৎকার করে বলল, "এই পাথর! তুমি আজ কথা বলছ না কেন?"

কোনো উত্তর এল না।

সে আবার চিৎকার করে বলল, "এই পাথর! তুমি আজ নীরব কেন?"

তবুও কোনো উত্তর এল না।

বানরটি তৃতীয়বার ডাকল, "এই পাথর! তুমি কথা বলছ না কেন?"

কুমিরটি ভাবল, "যদি আমি এখন উত্তর না দিই, তাহলে সে সন্দেহ করবে এবং পালিয়ে যাবে।"

তাই সে বলল, "হ্যাঁ, বন্ধু, আমি কথা বলছি।"

The monkey was now sure it was a trick. He quickly came up with an idea and said, "Oh, Rock! You are talking today! Do you know, I was carrying some fruits for my friend, the crocodile? He told me he would be waiting on the rock today. But I don’t see him. Have you seen him?"

The crocodile thought, "This is my golden opportunity." He said, "Yes, I saw your friend. He was here a while ago. He said he would return soon."

The monkey said, "Oh, then I will wait here." He sat down on the island and started singing.

After some time, the crocodile got impatient and asked, "Aren’t you going to the island?"

বানরটি এখন নিশ্চিত হলো যে এটি একটি ধোঁকা।

সে তাড়াতাড়ি একটি উপায় বের করল এবং বলল, "ওহ, পাথর! তুমি আজ কথা বলছ! তুমি জানো, আমি আমার বন্ধু কুমিরের জন্য কিছু ফল নিয়ে যাচ্ছিলাম। সে আমাকে বলেছিল যে আজ সে এই পাথরের উপর অপেক্ষা করবে। কিন্তু আমি তাকে দেখতে পাচ্ছি না। তুমি কি তাকে দেখেছ?"

কুমিরটি ভাবল, "এটাই আমার সোনালী সুযোগ।"

সে বলল, "হ্যাঁ, আমি তোমার বন্ধুকে দেখেছি। সে কিছুক্ষণ আগে এখানে ছিল। সে বলেছিল, সে শীঘ্রই ফিরে আসবে।"

বানরটি বলল, "ওহ, তাহলে আমি এখানেই অপেক্ষা করব।"

সে দ্বীপের উপর বসে গান গাইতে লাগল।

কিছুক্ষণ পর, কুমিরটি অধৈর্য হয়ে জিজ্ঞাসা করল, "তুমি কি দ্বীপে যাচ্ছ না?"

The monkey replied, "No, I will wait for my friend."

The crocodile realized that his plan had failed. He jumped into the water and swam away.

The monkey laughed and said, "You can’t fool me, Mr. Crocodile!"

বানরটি উত্তর দিল, "না, আমি আমার বন্ধুর জন্য অপেক্ষা করব।"

কুমিরটি বুঝতে পারল যে তার পরিকল্পনা ব্যর্থ হয়েছে।

সে পানিতে ঝাঁপ দিল এবং সাঁতার কেটে চলে গেল।

বানরটি হেসে বলল, "তুমি আমাকে বোকা বানাতে পারবে না, মিস্টার কুমির!"
